Return Authorization (Autorización de Regreso)
Need to travel while your TIE card is being processed? The autorización de regreso lets you leave Spain and come back. It’s a single-use document valid for 90 days.
When You Need It
- Your TIE is being processed and you only have the resguardo
- Your residence renewal is pending
- You need to travel outside Spain or the Schengen area urgently
- Your visa has expired but your residence is approved
You probably don’t need it if you have a valid TIE card, or if you’re only traveling within Schengen (though some airlines still ask for it).
Where to Get It
Police station (Comisaría) with a foreigners unit. Same place you do TIE fingerprints. Find your nearest office →

How to Book

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel within Schengen without it?
Technically yes, if your residence application is pending you have legal status. But some airlines and border agents don’t understand this and might give you trouble. Many people get the autorización de regreso anyway to avoid problems.
Can I get multiple return authorizations?
Yes. Each one is single-use, so you need a new one for each trip. If you travel frequently, try to time things so your TIE is ready before your next trip.
What if my application is denied while I’m abroad?
The return authorization allows re-entry, but if your underlying application gets denied, you could face issues. Try not to travel with pending applications unless you really have to.
