No Appointments Available? Here’s What to Do
The “no hay citas disponibles” message is frustrating but normal. Appointments do appear throughout the day. Here’s how to find them.
Why It Happens
Major cities have millions of foreign residents competing for limited slots. New appointments get released at different times depending on the province, and they disappear fast.
Strategies That Work
Check at the Right Times
Early morning (8:00 to 9:00 AM Spain time) tends to be best when new batches release. Some offices release in the afternoon around 2:00 to 3:00 PM. Monday mornings and the first of the month can also be good.
Every province is different, so there’s no guaranteed time. But mornings are consistently better than late afternoon.
Try Different Offices
Your NIE or TIE is valid from any office in Spain. If Madrid is full, check surrounding provinces like Toledo, Guadalajara, or Segovia. Smaller cities usually have better availability.
Check Multiple Times Daily
Cancellations pop up throughout the day. Set reminders to check three or four times. Don’t just try once and give up.
Be Ready to Book Immediately
Have your passport number ready. Know your NIE if you have one. Book the moment you see a slot because they disappear in seconds.
If You Have a Deadline
Running out of time on a visa or permit? Document your attempts. Take screenshots showing “no citas disponibles” with timestamps. This shows good faith if there are questions later.
Spanish authorities understand the appointment problem. Having proof that you’ve been trying helps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do people usually wait?
It varies a lot. Some people get lucky within days, others spend weeks checking. In Madrid and Barcelona, expect to spend one to three weeks trying. Smaller cities are usually faster.
Will I lose my visa status if I can’t get an appointment?
Document your attempts. Spanish authorities understand the system is overwhelmed. Showing good faith effort (screenshots, dates tried) helps if there are questions about timing later.
