Overview
The foreigner ID number. Can’t do much in Spain without it—bank accounts, property purchases, contracts, employment.
NIE vs TIE
The NIE is just a number. If you get a residence permit, you’ll also get a TIE card (physical ID card) that displays your NIE. Non-residents can have an NIE without a TIE.
Application
- Apply at police station with appointment or consulates abroad
- Reason for needing it must be documented
- Property purchase, business setup justify applications
- The number is permanent—stays with you even if you leave Spain
