Can I Work Remotely from Spain?

Check whether remote work from Spain needs the Digital Nomad Visa, EU registration, or another work-authorized route.

Updated 13 May 2026. Digital Nomad Visa income references reflect the 2026 Spanish SMI. Non-working residence is not treated as a remote-work route.

Can you work remotely from Spain? Usually the answer depends on nationality, work source, employee or freelancer status, income, family members, and whether you need a visa or can register under EU free movement.

Remote work in Spain: start with the right route

For non-EU remote workers, the main work-authorized route is usually Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa or international telework residence. The non-working or non-lucrative residence route is not a remote-work solution: current Spanish consular guidance describes it as residence without gainful work or professional activity, including teleworking.

Remote work visa options

Digital Nomad Visa / international telework residence

This is the route built for non-EU nationals who want to live in Spain while working remotely for companies or clients outside Spain through digital means. Employees are generally limited to employers outside Spain. Freelancers may have limited Spanish-client activity if it stays within the permitted percentage and the rest of the file fits.

EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need a work visa for Spain, but residence registration, tax residence, healthcare, social security, and business setup can still matter after arrival.

Non-working / non-lucrative residence

This route is for people who can reside in Spain without carrying out work or professional activity. It should not be used as a remote-work shortcut. If you intend to work online from Spain, review the Digital Nomad Visa or another work-authorized route instead.

Sources and assumptions
  • Spanish telework visa guidance: remote work/professional activity for companies outside Spain; employee work is for companies outside Spain, while self-employed activity may include limited Spanish-client work within the permitted percentage.
  • Spanish non-working/non-lucrative residence guidance: residence without gainful work or professional activity; it does not allow teleworking.
  • 2026 SMI references are used for planning screens; confirm current filing instructions before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work remotely from Spain as a tourist?

Tourist stays are not a work authorisation strategy. Remote work, client location, duration, tax residence, and the reason for being in Spain should be reviewed before relying on a tourist stay.

Which routes can allow remote work from Spain?

Common routes include the Digital Nomad Visa, EU family or EU citizen situations, Spanish employment routes, and other residence statuses depending on the facts.

When does remote work become a tax issue?

Tax risk increases when days in Spain, family presence, business management, Spanish clients, or a permanent home in Spain point toward Spanish tax residence.

Does remote work create Spanish payroll or Social Security risk?

It can. Employee status, employer registration, A1 or bilateral coverage, Spanish payroll, and permanent establishment facts should be reviewed before a long stay.

Are freelancers treated the same as remote employees?

No. Freelancers need special attention to Spanish client percentages, contracts, tax registration, Social Security, invoicing, and whether their activity is really independent.
