Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa: One Year Later

It has been over two years since Spain launched its Digital Nomad Visa. Time for an honest assessment.

The Good News

Processing times have improved. What started as 3-4 months is now closer to 20 working days in most consulates. The online application portal works. Madrid finally figured out the technology.

The income threshold of €2,763 per month is reasonable. It tracks the Spanish minimum wage at 200%. More accessible than many expected when the law was announced.

What We Have Learned

Documentation requirements vary by consulate. Los Angeles wants everything apostilled. London is more relaxed. We now know which consulates to recommend based on your situation.

The Beckham Law combination works. Nomad visa holders can apply for the special tax regime. 24% flat rate for six years. This was unclear at launch. Now confirmed.

Common Mistakes

Applying without sufficient income history. You need 12 months of bank statements showing consistent earnings. Starting last week does not count.

Wrong health insurance. Travel insurance is not enough. You need a policy that explicitly covers Spain with no copays. We have a list of approved providers.

Missing the Beckham Law deadline. You have 6 months from your Social Security registration. Miss it and you pay regular rates for the next decade.

Who Should Apply

Remote workers earning €3,000+ per month from non-Spanish sources. Freelancers with established client bases abroad. Entrepreneurs who can prove their business operates outside Spain.

The visa is working as intended. Spain wanted to attract talent. It is happening. Barcelona and Valencia are filling up with people who planned their move properly.
