Why Indonesian Citizens Choose Spain

Spain offers Indonesian professionals something hard to find elsewhere: a European base with excellent quality of life at a reasonable cost. The tech sector in cities like Barcelona and Madrid is growing fast, and Indonesian entrepreneurs find Spain’s position as a gateway to the EU market attractive. The Mediterranean lifestyle, world-class healthcare, and strong public education system also draw families looking for a better work-life balance.

Indonesia Spain Visa Options

Indonesian citizens need a visa for any stay in Spain longer than tourism. Here are your main pathways:

Digital Nomad Visa. For remote employees, founders and consultants paid mainly from outside Spain. We check income, contracts, family members and tax timing before you file.
Non-Lucrative Visa. For retirees and families living from savings, pensions or investment income. The route is calm on paper, but the funds, health insurance and renewal plan need to be right.
Student Visa. For university, master’s, language programmes and family-funded study plans. We handle the visa, renewals, TIE steps and the move into work or residence later.
Beckham Law. Not a visa. It is the tax review to do early if you are moving for work, remote work or a founder role and may qualify for the 24% regime.
Company Formation / SL Setup. For founders who need a Spanish company, shareholder structure, tax registration and immigration plan lined up from the start.
Entrepreneur Visa. For founders with a real business project in Spain. The file needs more than incorporation: the business case, timing and residence strategy have to fit together.
EU Blue Card. For qualified employees with a serious Spanish job offer. We treat it as executive relocation, not job-search sponsorship.

Tax Considerations for Indonesians in Spain

Tax Treaty: Indonesia-Spain

Indonesia and Spain signed a Double Taxation Agreement in 2017, effective January 1, 2023. This replaced the older 1995 treaty and provides reduced withholding rates on dividends, interest, and royalties.

183-Day Rule: Living 183+ days in Spain = Spanish tax resident. Must declare worldwide income.

Key Points:

  • Beckham Law: Flat 24% tax for 6 years on Spanish income. Available if you haven’t been Spanish tax resident in the previous 5 years.
  • Indonesian Income: Rental income from properties in Indonesia must be declared but treaty prevents double taxation.
  • Pensions: Generally taxed in country of residence (Spain) under the treaty.

Required Documents for Indonesian Applicants

Required Documents:

  • Passport valid for at least 1 year with blank pages
  • Criminal Record from Indonesian National Police, apostilled through Ministry of Law and Human Rights
  • Medical Certificate from authorized doctor
  • Proof of Income (bank statements covering 6+ months, contracts)
  • Health Insurance from Spanish-authorized provider, no copays, no coverage limits
  • Application Form completed and signed
  • Photos passport size, white background
  • Visa Fee

Indonesia joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents can be apostilled through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. All documents need sworn translation into Spanish. The apostille process takes several weeks, so start immediately. Need help with document legalization? We handle the entire process.

Healthcare in Spain

Spain’s public healthcare system ranks among the best globally. As a legal resident, you’ll have access after registering with Social Security. For your first year on most visa types, you’ll need private health insurance. Budget around €100/month for comprehensive coverage. The quality of care is excellent, and costs are a fraction of what you’d pay privately in Jakarta.

Path to Spanish Citizenship for Indonesians

Indonesian citizens need 10 years of legal, continuous residence to apply for Spanish citizenship. Indonesia was never a Spanish territory, so the accelerated 2-year pathway doesn’t apply.

Critical point on dual citizenship: Indonesia does NOT allow dual citizenship for adults. When you naturalize as Spanish, you will lose your Indonesian citizenship. This is enforced by Indonesia. The November 2026 “Global Citizenship of Indonesia” (GCI) program provides unlimited residency for former citizens, but it’s not dual citizenship.

Think carefully about what losing Indonesian citizenship means for property ownership, inheritance, and family connections. Spain requires a renunciation declaration, and Indonesia will actually revoke your citizenship.

Requirements for citizenship:

  • 10 years continuous legal residence
  • DELE A2 Spanish language exam
  • CCSE exam (Spanish constitutional and cultural knowledge)
  • Clean criminal record
  • No absences longer than 6 months in any year

After naturalizing, always use your Spanish passport for travel. Exclusively using another passport for 3+ years can result in losing Spanish citizenship.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the visa process take from Indonesia?

Expect 4-6 months total: 2-3 months for document preparation and apostilles, then 1-3 months for consulate processing. Book your Jakarta appointment early as slots fill quickly.

Can I keep my Indonesian citizenship if I become Spanish?

No. Indonesia does not allow dual citizenship for adults. When you naturalize as Spanish, Indonesia will revoke your citizenship. This is enforced. The new GCI program provides residency rights for former citizens but is not dual citizenship.

What’s the minimum income for a Non-Lucrative Visa?

You need approximately €2,400/month (€28,800/year) in passive income or equivalent savings for the main applicant. Add €600/month for each additional family member. Rental income from Indonesian properties counts.

Do I need to speak Spanish to get a visa?

Not for most visa types. But you’ll need A2 level Spanish for citizenship after 10 years. We strongly recommend starting Spanish lessons before you move. It makes daily life and bureaucracy much easier.
